About Me

I am a recent graduate of Hunter College’s MA in Visual arts Education (spring 2022) . I have about three years of teaching prior to finishing my program as an activity specialist at South Asian Youth Action.

Learning is part of life's journey. There are ups and downs and the possibility of finding new routes known before. As a teacher, I believe my vocation is to guide students through those moments.

The purpose of education is to prepare students to become citizens, but with increased connectivity of the world, their citizenship is on a global scale. Includes being able to think critically and out of the box. These skills develop through art education.

I teach visual arts due to the connection to the world; art has been part of human civilization since prehistoric times. Every culture has used art to communicate with others, provide entertainment, and be a visual representation of values and ideals. This is especially true in today's society when many things are conveyed through a visual medium or seen through social media. I also teach the visual arts to allow students to express and explore their creative sensibilities in which they are exposed to various ways of creating and exploring ideas.

When teaching visual art, my goals are for students to gain experience with various materials, explore ideas and concepts, and communicate through a visual medium. When teaching, I want students to see multiple materials that they can use to create artwork, including things they can find at home and other artificial found materials to inspire creativity and ingenuity within students. The visual arts are a fantastic way for students to explore ideas and concepts that may be a bit too difficult to explain through words alone. Not only can they make art based on their own experiences but their ideas and their views on the world and allowing a space where students feel comfortable expressing those ideas. The goal of communicating through a visual medium is crucial. In a day and age when it's so much of our culture is visual, allowing students to speak and understand what various symbols and icons mean. It will enable them to be prepared for when they encounter them outside of the school and allow them to communicate with a larger group of people outside their respective communities.

Students learn best in the visual arts by experimenting and exploring. This is why it is part of my methods when teaching. While having guided instruction is essential, allowing students time to have time with materials and ideas to formulate their conclusions is vital. This is usually Embedded early in a unit with new material or as an activity for early finishers. Another part of the teaching method is recall and discussion. Often art is seen as an activity for an individual and not something that revolves around the community, which is false. The most significant movements in art history did not happen because of an individual it happened because a group of individuals came together. In my classroom, I want to develop the best same culture well. Every student is their own artist and will feel comfortable expressing their work and ideas to others in the class, and they can be inspired by and have someone to talk about their ideas. There would often be discussions about artists, artwork or materials, and gallery walks and class critiques, allowing students 2 bring in their prior knowledge that they gained in class And conclusions they may have come to. Students we'll have many opportunities to have information recalled to them either by myself or by their classmates. I make it a point to make sure that all students understand the task at hand through worksheets having students parrot or restate things that I have said and having them either written out or on the board.
